New Delhi: Within a period of five months, it is the second instance of death of children due to measles vaccination. This time it happened in Maharashtra.
On Friday, 10 children aged between 9-12 months were given measles vaccine at Waghola, in Aurangabad. Four of them died the next day. While the remaining six are undergoing treatment.
The particular batch of vaccine has been withdrawn, official sources said.
In April, 4 children in TN died within minutes of administering the vaccine. Severe anaphylactic shock leading to brain haemorrhage had caused the deaths. But it still remains unclear what caused such a severe anaphylactic shock as laboratory analysis revealed that the vaccines — manufactured by Indian Immunological Ltd — were not contaminated.
The officials were intrigued as they could not figure out how three kids died after being injected from a single vial.
Records show 230 doses of the same vaccine batch were used in the same health centre that day but no other deaths were recorded.
Following Aurangabad deaths, the Centre deputed a team headed by Spl Dir Gen in the Directorate Gen of Health Services which consists of the Drug Controller General and the Deputy Comm, Immunisation.
