Bunking classes
By Swapna Kishore
These days, going to school need not necessarily mean attending classes.

My son was scandalised when I told him that I had never bunked classes at school. “Then how did you ever study?” he asked. “In our times teachers were forthcoming,” I told him, as he looked on with disbelief.

“Of course, some did bunk classes,” I admitted. “A classmate of mine would board the bus in full-view of his parents, but would get down a few stops later. Similarly he would board the bus a few stops before his house and enter home as if he was genuinely tired, with ink-marks on his shirt!”

My son did have his own stories about school. He once wanted to ask something to his chemistry teacher. But she, basking in warm sunlight with oranges, made a face and told him: “Son, why don’t you relax and also let us relax?”

So, in my son’s case, attending school need not necessarily mean attending classes. He would bunk boring classes and roam in the corridor, appearing to be busy on a genuine errand. He also grabbed every available opportunity to skip classes —such as volunteering to arrange tables and chairs, picking up test papers and getting homeroom registers filled.

In his final year at school, he regularly bunked classes. His reason: “I don’t want to get confused, because the teachers aren’t taking the syllabus in an easier way.” I learnt through my enquiries with other parents that students went to school only to build attendance, make friends and relax.

Once my son’s school organised an exhibition and made attendance compulsory (after school hours). My son and his friends didn’t know this, as they bunked the class the previous day. As the class teacher asked them to stay back, they told him that it was difficult to do that as none of them had informed their parents.

“If you can’t attend the exhibition, why did you come to school?” the teacher asked. “We’ve come to study,” the students replied. The teacher however appeared unconvinced!!
