Hema Malini joins BJP, Cong joins issue

While actress and Rajya Sabha member Hema Malini on Thursday formally joined the BJP, saying her actor husband Dharmendra too would come into the party fold and campaign for the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress Party strongly objected to a Rajya Sabha member joining a political party, and said it would raise the issue with President A P J Abdul Kalam.

“The Congress will complain about it to the President. He himself should see that this provision (the role of a nominated member) is not violated,” party spokesman Anand Sharma told newspersons. Sharma said a nominated member joining a political party violated conventions and constitutional provisions.

He said Hema Malini’s announcement that she would join the BJP was “objectionable” and against all rules.

The 55-year-old Bollywood danseuse, said she was not ready to contest elections. “If the BJP asks me I will think it over,” she said.

Asked if her actor-husband Dharmendra would enter politics, she said, “He too has a great liking for the BJP. He will definitely be campaigning during the polls but I do not think he will contest. He is not used to it.”

Party president M Venkaiah Naidu said any nominated Rajya Sabha member could become a member of a party within six months of her joining the house. Hema Malini was nominated last year.
