20 hurt in blasts in Amritsar

Atleast 20 people were injured in two blasts in an official armoury near the district court complex at Amritsar on Thursday evening.

Sources said the blasts occurred when the police were trying to destroy the confiscated ammunition kept in the armoury. Window panes of some of the offices and buildings in the vicinity of the blast were shattered.

The twin blasts, which occurred almost simultaneously, also damaged roofs of temporary sheds in the district court complex. The offices of the District Magistrate and the district police chief of Amritsar are also in the vicinity of the blast site. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and cordoned-off the area. The nature of the explosives in the blast was still to be ascertained.

There was a huge scare in the district complex after the blasts as people ran helter-skelter apprehending a terrorist strike. The injured have been admitted to hospitals.
