An eye for detail

“This is a profession where people trust you with your eyes and their faith is the most important thing,” says Hemanth Manay. He should know. Manay is the third generation proprietor of S R Gopal Rao and Sons, Bangalore’s first qualified opticians, who have been in the city since 1904. Their first showroom was located opposite what is now the Vani Vilas Hospital and in 1936, they opened another on N R Road, which still stands at exactly the same spot. And yesterday (January 28), they opened their new showroom at Devatha Plaza on Residency Road, right next to Rugs ‘n’ Riches.

Over the past century and ‘three generations of trust’, as their logo proclaims, S R Gopal Rao have been opticians to a wide strata from the Maharajah of Mysore to the common man. They are not just opticians, involved in the dispensing of spectacles, but are also qualified optometricians, who use state-of-the-art technology to check your eyesight. Both shops are equipped with auto-refractometers and Manay is a diploma holder in optometry from the Minto Ophthalmic Hospital.

At S R Gopal Rao, a routine eye-check and fitting of lenses are part of their services - they are not charged for. And you can take your pick of frames from a wide variety of brands which include Giordano, Swarovski, Hugo Boss, Silhouette, Reebok, Nike, Armani, Bvlgari, Gucci, Burberry and Cartier. Lenses are high-end progressive and premium anti-reflect coated while the range of contact lenses include conventional, disposable and cosmetic. They also stock sunglasses from Ray Ban and Silhouette among many others. The price range goes from a very affordable Rs 500 to Rs 30,000 if you opt for one of the high-end frames.

Both showrooms, at N R Road and Residency Road, are open from 10 am to 8 pm on all days, except Sunday. S R Gopal Rao is at B-5, Devatha Plaza (opp Bishop Cotton Boys School), Residency Road, phone 22228348/51125909 and at 84, N R Road, phone 22222217/185.
