The State government will allow Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Vice-Chancellor K Balaveera Reddy to complete his term up to March 2007, said Minister for Higher Education D H Shankaramurthy.
Speaking to Deccan Herald on Friday, Shankaramurthy said that the decision was taken after consultations with the Law department.
BJP MLA Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri had recently raised the issue of the VC’s extended tenure in the Assembly. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M P Prakash had assured the House that the government would reply after consultations with the Minister for Higher Education. Reddy himself said that the VTU and RGUHS, unlike traditional varsities, were governed by their own rule.
“I have the sanction of the Governor of Karnataka and the AICTE,” he added. The VTU Act, 1994 does not mention about the age of retirement of it’s VCs, according to officials in the Law department.
The governing bodies, UGC and AICTE rules pertain to the performance of the VC rather than his age.
Reddy was continued in the office of the VC for a second term for a period of 3 years from April 1, 2004.
