Real-time public grievance redressal

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is in the process of adopting an ambitious e-governance programme, the highlights of which are a real-time public grievance redressal system and the integration of Property Tax collection system with GIS (Geographic Information System).

The programme is scheduled to be actualised between August 15 and April 1 next. The module for the programme is provided by the eGovernments Foundation, a not-for-profit trust which has previously provided a similar module to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

New website

The BMP’s programme will take off on Independence Day with the launch of an all-new website. The Public Grievance and Redressal package will be launched on September 15, the Property tax package on November 15 and so on.

Briefing the press on Friday, BMP Commissioner K Jairaj observed that the integration of Property Tax details with GIS had potential to significantly increase the revenue returns to the BMP.

Ward-wise details of each building, its type of usage and tax or untaxed status will be readily available; identification of escapee assessees will, therefore, become easier, he noted.

Public grievances

The public grievance redressal system will reportedly be complete with a complaint tracking number to the complainant, auto-routing of complaints to appropriate departments etc. The Commissioner noted that the system could eventually see the BMP’s control rooms operating like call centres.

According to co-founder and chief of eGovernments Foundation Srikanth Nadhamuni, the entire module will be an internet-based interactive system.

Besides Delhi, the urban local bodies of Sirsi, Ankola and Shahabad are among those that have previously availed the services of the Foundation.

It is also involved in Statewide e-governance initiative in Karnataka and in the process of networking about 56 cities.
