Santosh Trophy
Delhi rout Himachal
Thiruvananthapuram, PTI:
Delhi, who led by one goal at half-time, cashed in on mistakes by Himachal goalkeeper Pankaj Dutt, slamming in six more in the second session.

Striker Lalit Singh Rawat scored four goals as Delhi trounced Himachal Pradesh 7-0 in a Cluster II league match on the opening day of the 60th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy which kicked off at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium here on Friday.

Delhi, who led by a solitary goal at the breather, switched gears in the second session and pumped in six goals.

Himachal's defence and the goalkeeper were tested time and again by the Delhi forwards. Lalit Singh scored in the 10th, 59th, 89th and 90th minutes. In between, Faiz Alam, Sumith Thappa and substitute Ricky Chhakchuakk rattled the net.

In a one-sided opening encounter which failed to come alive, the Delhi strikers controlled the proceedings throughout. The victors could translate their superiority into goals only in the second session.

Himachal custodian Pankaj Dutt had a miserable day on the field and his collection left a lot to be desired. Three of the Delhi goals were scored due to his mistakes.

Bihar is the other team in the cluster.

Uttaranchal win

In a Cluster I match at Kozhikode, Uttaranchal overcame Madhya Pradesh 2-1 after leading 2-0 at half-time.

While Siddarth Thapa and Kundan Singh Kanwa scored for the winners, Praveen Nair reduced the margin for the losers in the second session.

Thapa opened the account for Uttaranchal when he scored in the 13th minute off a corner-kick by Narendra Singh Rautela. The winners surged ahead when Kundan, latching on to a pass from Siddharth, outwitted the defence and banged the ball home.

Midfielder Nair scored for Madhya Pradesh in the 71st minute off a pass from Anju Pratap Singh.

Though that raised MP's hopes, the equaliser just eluded them despite making a couple of dangerous forays late in the second session of a drab encounter.

Zee to telecast

Zee Sports, which has the rights to telecast football events in the country for the next 10 years, will beam live 16 matches of the Santosh Trophy, the channel announced on Friday.

With John Helm and former England international Russel Osman in the commentary box, the matches would be shown from the quarterfinal stage beginning in Kochi on November 11.
